Centrala 22nd May
Another stellar event at the wonderful Centrala, with a fantastic and varied lineup, including some new performers. We don't play favourites, here, no matter what the writers and organisers might think personally, so here are the performers!
You can link to all the performers through the "Our Performers" page on the Birmingham EMOM website.
First up and a newcomer to Birmingham EMOM is Compassion House Sounds, playing a very retro-infused set with vocal samples and 90s hard-house beats:
Followed by Habbit's first performance in Birmingham, with upbeat Sci-fi soundscapes:
The next picture shows something shocking to most EMOM regulars... a bass guitar!! Though Robert has played with us before, so maybe no too much of a shock.
But fear not... samples, processing and effects yield swirling psychedelia rooted in solid groove basslines with The Tantric Obstacles, self-confessed fan of The Ozric Tentacles:
The next act was another newcomer and a fascinating way of making music, hellocatfood, Antonio, who brought live-coding and video synthesis to the night:
Antonio gave a workshop at Pan-Pan the following week in which he taught the principles of this type of music-making. This was part of the launch event for the Birmingham Centre for Electronic Music.
Steve has performed for us before as one half of the duo Beech Drive Circular but this time he performed solo as Traindeer with a signature sound based on samples and lo-fi ambience:
NX Reaside performed at our first-ever event and made a welcome return with a completely different set, this time focussing on the use of tiny Korg Volca pocket synths to build beats and big sounds:
Another newcomer, Nomosapien, brought techno-infused sounds with textural washes:
Finally, a real suprise who stepped in at the last moment to fill in for someone who cancelled, Didaktik MK, with some astonishing beats and vocals which really can't be categorised (think DeeWee records and you're in the right area):
